What is Syrah?
Syrah grapes are small to medium in size. Bunches are medium sized and compact. The wine is a deep, dark color that has a peppery, fruity flavor with medium tannins. Syrah goes well with rare, red meats, lamb, dark fleshed game, and meaty stews of beef or rich beef casseroles. This aromatic full bodied red wine teams up well with cold meats, liver, wild mushroom dishes and hard cheeses.
Syrah is grown in a multitude of locations in California, from cool coastal climates to hot interior valleys. Syrah is grown with different degrees of success. In our climate, we have to thin the fruit aggressively to make sure we can get the fruit to ripen. Even doing this, we still do not harvest until late in October to mid or late November.
